Saw the same operation at the bridge near Horseshoe Riverside Lodge. Over half of the river’s width is blocked. Will this affect stocking at that location? Also saw what appear to be redds in shallows behind the Lodge.
Construction is blocking river access on the north side of 306 near River Rose.November 11, 2024 at 1:54 pm #16914Text me when you want to fish (I don’t usually answer the phone when I see unfamiliar numbers). Same decade here and regular gym visits have me in fairly good fishing condition.
Fished the Guadalupe back when they first stocked with rainbows and have fished there intermittently when I could. Seriously started fly fishing four years ago with a trip to the Orvis fly casting school, have also fished Taos and the Driftless since then.Al

Concrete reinforcing for piers and slabs is stacked up on the Whitewater side of the road. I watched workers dump large limestone chunks in the road drainage next to the river, but couldn’t see if any went in.
I was also surprised by what appears to be an elevator tower and wood framing behind the River Rose Tavern. Looks to me like it might be a condo project.
I expect some commotion in that area this fishing season.March 24, 2024 at 1:13 pm #16346Lanesboro is a short drive from Preston, see my previous post. Duschee Creek is near Lanesboro. Easy fishing for all near the hatchery and more serious opportunities upstream. Also visit Root River Rod Co.
Other observations: That area seems to be a favorite for cycling. A good town for walking, including hills. Food: Great, rich ice cream at Another Time Ice Cream Parlor. Excellent pies at Aroma Pie Shop. This is Amish country so a visit to nearby Harmony is an opportunity for crafts shopping and more good eating.March 21, 2024 at 9:20 pm #16343Recommend the Driftless Fly Fishing Co., Preston MN, Orvis Endorsed. Tim Carver was my guide. Tim put me on more fish than I had ever dreamed I could catch. Streams are spring-fed, small and cold. There are a few wild brookies among the wild brown trout. Most fish were in 12″-15″ range but there are stories of really big trout hiding under overhanging turf. I plan to return to fish with Tim again.
I also did some DIY fishing, fun but not as successful. TroutRoutes allowed me to cover a lot of territory. With the many streams there, I think it’s an essential. My 4 weight was the perfect rod for those streams.
Stayed at what is now Trailhead Inn and Suites. Basic and good value.
I flew into Minneapolis, which I recommend. Rental car rates were better there and the drive to Preston was easy enough. I’ve flown onto Chicago many times before and the same trip would have been much more difficult.
I was there in June and it was hot, upper 90’s. August-September could be very hot as well. Wet wading helped. -
