Linda, you sound like you have a great attitude and the fish gods keep rewarding you for it. I’m sure some anglers are looking for solitude and to be left alone, but I’ve found that most are willing to strike up a conversation, share the water and even share some tips. We are all out there to have a good time and do some fishing. No reason to take it too seriously. Usually poor etiquette comes from new anglers and younger folks, but we were all there at some point. We grow and learn.
The crowds this year is really a double edge sword. We all wish to have the river to ourselves, but increase interest means more funding and support for our fishery. This will not only benefit GRTU but also efforts to improve conservation efforts on our other rivers and native species.
Steve here’s my advice that echo’s what others have already shared. Guides are not fishing certain stretches because they are the most productive, we are limited by take out points and the obviously low water levels. Most of us are not going past L&L. If I have a day off and I head to the river to do some wade fishing, I will personally fish the lower leases. Less people and still plenty of fish.
Tight lines!
My first year since I’ve joined that I won’t make it out to any of the stockings. Thank you to all of those who have been able to lend a hand. A special thank you to Dan Cone for your awesome work since taking over for Jimbo. I think the membership sales speak for themselves, you have been doing a great job of continuing this great fishery for all of us to enjoy. Few members understand the work that goes on behind the scenes to make all this happen each year. Way to go Dan!

<p style=”text-align: left;”>Sounds like a bit of miscommunication occurred here. Did you and your son have your badges displayed along with the one for your vehicle? This is a free access site for grtu members and $10 for any other fly angler.

Im not sure who Chris has working the shop these days but hopefully you were not treated poorly. Sounds like the person did not know you were a grtu member and was just doing their job.I’ll take passive aggressive landowners any day of the week as appose to an actual aggressive one. If you have ever had a gun waived at you on a river then what John did becomes pretty harmless in comparison. At the end of the day John wants these fish to survive and stay healthy, that’s much better than most land and business owners on river road.
If you really want something to be upset about, how about businesses that sell live worms and stink bait on river road when those methods are illegal for trout fishing on our river?
I’ve done it all! Used a bicycle, walked, hitchhiked, Uber, and the very grateful friendly rides from other grtu members. Local shops or even local guides may be able to help out if you contact them in advance, definitely not the morning of.
I use uber pretty reliability on other rivers but around Sattler, drivers are rare. Maybe there’s more drivers there this year, but I wouldn’t rely on it.
I’m keeping my eye out for a little Honda trail bike that I can haul with the raft, self shuttle. And fun!
Dana, fishing is tough for everyone right now. Especially if you are wade fishing. Even some of the guides are reporting low number days. I floated 3 weeks ago and two of us put around 15 fish in the net. I floated this past Saturday and two of us only landed 2 fish. With high flows the fish are simply holding in areas that you just can’t reach and if you do a natural drift will be nearly impossible.
Have patience. These high flows are keeping our fish healthy, and safe from harvest. This could lead to a huge number of holdovers next season. And even possibilities of some dry fly action in the spring and fall.
