We are about half way to the 40 volunteers we need, if you are on the fence about helping, the weather forecast for Saturday is a low of 37 and a high of 62 with a few clouds. So, the weather is looking real good for stocking this time of year.
Thanks for volunteering !!!!Jimbo Roberts
GRTU V.P. of FisheriesIt’s the Season…. When they start dropping it usually takes about 2-3 weeks for all of them to drop and stop being the hang-up they are…. If we get a strong cold front with higher winds and lower temperatures it will speed up the process. Till then you just have to grin and bear it…. Merry Christmas !!!!

Thanks everyone for volunteering. We have such a great group of members that will put in the hard work to make the dream come true. It’s going to be cold and wet tomorrow, so layer up, bring your rain jacket and a good hat, along with your waders and boots. See you in the morning !!!!

Actually it’s the “First Island Drop” below Mountain Creek Pool on the left and I will confirm it’s ability to grab your flys either while casting, but for me more often, I’ll set the hook and miss or be fighting a fish that lets go and my flies will be in the trees or brush on the high bank behind me…. #@!%$&*!

Most of the names that have been adopted over the years for various locations were named by my generation. I put the name on many of them myself so my friends and I could talk about various locations on the river where we had been successful catching Trout.
S Turn Rapids is not where many think it is. Mountain Creek pool was identified correctly, but the drop directly below it on the left around the first island is not S Turn Rapids. It is the First Island Drop. The next long peace of deep water was named by Ron McAlpin as Redhorse Run. Then the next riffle, below Hunters House, is Hunters Hole. Then below that, still in left channel, the river bends back to the right below the Second Island, and is the last exit back merging with the right channel, forming the main river channel again. This: turn and rapid/riffle, is really S Turn Rapids. Over the years it has been misidentified for so long that many do believe the First Island Drop is S Turn Rapids. But S Turn Rapids more accurately describes what the river does below Hunters Hole. This makes more sense if you think about it, because what the river does below Mountain Creek pool can not be described as an S Turn in anyway, even when thinking about what the river looked like here in the past before Mountain Creek Pool started to fill in. The old guides and river rats know this, because when the river is running at higher levels, the “Real” S Turn Rapids can be a lot of fun, if not a hand full negotiating it. Below S Turn Rapids is 6B named after an old GRTU Lease, then comes the Cement Pond, followed by Potts Run/Hole.

Lazy L&L
New This year…..
They are going to close the main entrance gate and put a lock on it. It will be there at least during the night, but might be there even be closed during the day. The combo will be the same as the other lease sites. It might be open during office hours. Roland, the site manager, said they have been having problems with people coming in after hours without authorization and some theft has been happening at night. This is not a reflection on our membership, but they are doing this to protect their overnight campers. They said something about feeding the fish all year and how the general public might interpret that, being an artificial fishery, that is not self-sustaining, and now feeding them year-round. Plus I had to admit, feeding the fish does fill them up and they tend to not bite very well for the rest of the day, so anglers would see a slow bite on the days of feeding…. I had one supporting vote and the rest of the board voted against it, so it wasn’t even close.
