Nonetheless, the river offers multiple educational lessons,…..

    “Fly removal from trees”

Do you use the: jerk and cuss, jiggle sideways, grapple hook, or tree shimmy techniques ?

The first one looks like it was born that way. I’ve seen it before. The second one looks like it was attacked by some predator. There are many on the river. I saw a Heron stalk a rising Trout and stab at him but not make the catch. That looks something like this one I caught last Thursday…..

I know Cortland Competition rods have a dedicated following. Many are used by veteran anglers, like Odom, on the Guad. I’ve read other articles which also mentioned Syndicate rods, on other forums, as an alternative to Sage’s CZN rods. I don’t really Czech nymph as competition rules dictate. I am usually indicator fishing, or in specific situations, will remove the indicator, and sometimes add a drop-shot tag for really swift water. I use split-shot because it’s what I know best and my fly selection/inventory is geared towards using split-shot rigs. Many of the flys I use are weightless or use glass beads. I believe that the lack of weight adds more life-like moment in the water to draw more strikes. But then again, I’m an old fart who resists change. That being said CZN nymphing does work well by those who spend the time to learn to use it.

P.S. Looking at your Rainbow JC I had to do a double take….. I thought at first it maybe the same fish, but studying it’s spots on the tail, it is different fish of the same size and coloration and from the same area….

I fished the San Juan some back in the early 90’s. I stayed at Abe’s Hotel back then, it was inexpensive and basic. I ate in the restaurant and bought 100’s of #18-24 flys from his Fly Shop. I didn’t know him well, but he always was cheerful and shared the info on the hot flys willingly. I slipped and stumbled my way around the upper couple of miles. He even told me where to go downstream to have a better chance to catch some Browns. He was an institution in Northwest New Mexico.

Just because the LAP leases are closed, many of the same areas may be accessed by paying an access fee. Lazy L&L, Rocky Beach, River Bank, and Bezdeks can all be fished after paying an daily access fee. Other places like Whitewater, Mountain Breeze, Gypsy’s, and Lone Star Float House are open and you can pay a daily fee and fish those waters. I have been using some of these places myself, paying a daily access fee and fishing. And I have a secret about this fishing that I am not willing to tell everyone yet……

Mac Brown does have some interesting ideas. I was at his seminar at TroutFest and learned a lot.

There is fish up to the weir above Maricopa. Above that probably not worth your time, but I do know of a few spots between there and the dam that hold Trout.

Good to see that the Browns Fry are getting close to size that is ready for stocking. I need to go pull the crates with the Whitlock/Vibert boxes we put in the river. I hope to see very little remaining in boxes indicating a good hatch.

Get ready, If tonight’s forecast is right there could be several inches of rain that falls over the upper Guadalupe Basin by tomorrow. Flows into the lake already had a little spike up with some local rain. Also if you live in the path of this storm I would recommend putting your vehicles under cover through tomorrow morning. The atmosphere is saturated and a big upper level impulse will head right up IH 35.

And,… The Texas Tech is in the finals for the first time !!!

    Wreck’em Tech !!!

Temperature monitors are only one of the things I’m going to bring up at the next Board Meeting.

That’s exactly what to do. First check the office, if it is closed then put your $10 on the security box between the gated access and the tube house. It’s best if you can put it in an envelope or stick a post-it on the money with your license plate number on it. That way they know who’s paying and what vehicle it goes with.

That pretty much sums up the situation as I understand it. Also the CORPS decided a few years ago not to allow the holding of water above 909’msl for the so called recreational pool. They did allow GBRA to control the releases between 911’msl and 909’msl as long as the lake level continues to fall. So GBRA can slow down the lake drop but not stop it at some level above 909’msl. Now once the lake hits 909’msl other rules kick in regarding the releases. If there is no drought declaration then releases must be at a minimum what the inflows are into the lake which theoretically could maintain the 909’msl. It never seems to work out just like that because of evaporation versus inflows of creeks and springs directly into the lake apart from the upper Guadalupe River flows. Nonetheless the result is we are going to need some significant rains in May to bring the lake up over pool and be above 909’msl on May 15 for the Flow Agreement to be inforced.
