So many times these last few months we have prayed for rain and they largely missed the upper Guadalupe Basin. Well, there is another hurricane crossing the Yucatan and looks like it may head north towards Texas. we sure could use that thing to come into Central Texas and stall out over Kerrville or Hunt. So, here’s to another small chance at significant rains….

The lake’s dropping like a rock. We need rain in a bad way !!!
There’s a Hurricane Roselyn off the Pacific coast of Mexico. They are predicting it to turn to the northeast, cross the mountains, and then across Texas. We need for it to slow down and meet the cold front coming down next Monday. If they could meet over the upper Guadalupe Basin, it could kick start the flows again.

No hard evidence that the Brown Trout egg stocking (WVB) produced any wild fish. When I pulled the boxes out, they looked clean and I suspect that many fry escaped into the river. What happened to the growing fingerlings is anybody’s guess. But it was only about 400 eggs and no real survey of the area other than what was caught by fishermen. There are several very large resident Browns living in the river as of last year. So some are surviving years after the last stocking. They do get nocturnal typically and that may be some of it. The Guadalupe in general is a mystery about many things. I wish I knew the answers to these questions, but I just don’t. Now we have seen some Rainbow Trout juveniles, some came from the Whitlock/Vibert boxes, some from the stocking of fry from Trout in the Classroom, and some very rare wild spawned fish. The original studies back in the 60’s done by experts (many are archived) said Browns would be the most suitable Trout for the river (but more expensive), and Rainbows would be the most cost effective. Brookies and Cutthroats were even tried but they are the most sensitive when it comes to water quality and temperature. And I love to see Rio Grande Cutthroats, but you know they would be the much more sensitive to thermal impacts of the late summer and fall we often see. There was also talk about Apache Trout or Gila Cutthroats because of their high temperature tolerances, but again limited supply and cost would make for very expensive experiments. I’ve obviously been involved in the discussions for a long time, but these are the short answers….

Adult Brown Trout are off the table for awhile. There is some interest in doing a massive Whitlock/Vibert Box planting of Brown Trout eggs though. It has even received the support of TPWD. The talk has not moved much lately from what I’ve heard from the board. It might be a next year thing, but once it starts it will likely be a multi-year program. I’m guessing a minimum of three years planting around 50,000 per year. It will attempt to establish a sustaining Brown Trout population in the upper river. We will wait and see what happens.

Well we have a developing low in the southern Caribbean that will soon be a tropical storm and then a hurricane, it will be called Julia. It’s on a very southern track west and will likely hit Central America later this weekend or early next week. These things usually take a right turn sooner or later. If it does it could make it towards Texas, that’s still a big “IF”. We sure could use the rain….

I recommend that everyone should attend at least one stocking and I would also suggest that if you are going to do only one stocking (I’ll be at all of them myself) you come to one of the later stockings as that is when we need the hands the most. The first stocking usually has so many people we have to stagger them downstream and congestion along River Road and the stocking sites is a real problem. So think about attending the 3rd and 4th stocking if at all possible. This season I should have more time to write a few more articles about fishing on the Guadalupe so look for those to pop up as the season progesses.

And you thought the Board was not listening….. The huge increase in demand for the LAP certainly caused problems over the years and we could not get ahead of the curve, so to speak, when it came to having servers that could cope with the stress put on them with everyone trying to sign in at the same time to compete for the available memberships. I also want to thank Chris Johnson for his live streaming orientation which laid out the LAP rules in a clear and concise fashion. I thought the back and forth through the texts was fun too. So we are now ready for another season of Trout Fishing on the Guadalupe. It is also noted that acquiring Trout will not be a problem this year as it has been the last two years. Dan and made the orders and they have been accepted by Crystal Lake Fisheries. Now if we could just get the rain we need to bring the flows up to 100cfs…..

    Here I am….

I spent the summer flyfishing the Rockies under a Thunderstorm, or should I say standing under a tree with a space blanket drapped over my shoulders. I spent 8 days camping on the Conejos, it rained 10″ in camp, including one afternoon it rained 3″ in 1 1/2 hours. The monsoons were strong. Then 2 weeks in Pagosa where I was able to fish only 3 days where I was not chased or shut-out by rain. Then I went to Afton Wyoming. The first week had hardly any rain, then the monsoons found me again. I spent the second week driving hours and then sitting in the Truck waiting out the heavy stuff to stop or driving around looking for a hole on the clouds. I arrived back in San Antonio late Sunday night and it rained .40″ Monday afternoon. More rain is forecast for Thursday, Friday, and Saturday here and over the Hill Country.
So I guess I am doing my job…..

Well, my front yard seems to be the epicenter of the heaviest rain in San Antonio. We received another 1/2″ overnight for a total of 3 3/4″, But the official measurements at the airport for the same period was 1 1/2″, which is an almost inconceivably difference. The area rivers barely showed a blip in increased flows. The good news is another round is predicted at the end of the week and this is one of the wettest times of the year historically. So maybe, just maybe, the upper Guadalupe will catch a few really good storms and bump the flows, get the lake to pool, and decent flows through the summer. Anyway, the Commanche in me is back on the drums for more….
