I talked with the lady that’s runs “Riverside Horseshoe Lodge” today (11-02-21) . She’s gave me a bunch of brochures for the place and said that the pricing for now would be $119.00 per night on weekends, Cheaper on weekdays and if you are a TU member to call them and they would work out an even better rate. Seem like they are smart enough to find out what the pricing in our area should be. Their phone number is 830-964-3600. I will bring the brochures she gave me to the fall meeting at L&L. They show some of the updating they have done to the lodge.
When I was there last week they still had not officially opened for business. I had thought about mentioning to them that what they showed me for the price structure was pretty high, but I do not think it is my place to say anything. I am hopping they will see what other places are charging and price their room rates accordingly. If they don’t they will have a lot of empty rooms.
I have fished the old Maricopa about 5 or 6 times since September trying to get the big carp that come from the deep hole on the other side of the bridge. About 2 weeks ago I counted 10 carp that were at least 30” swim across in front of me when I was trying to catch them. There was a large rainbow I estimated at over 24” that swims with them. Tried everything I had to get them to bite with no luck.
I also have talked with the new owners of the old Maricopa and they are completely renovating the whole place inside and out. They are from California and have taken over the place about 10 months ago. They showed me one of the completed rooms and they were very nice. The one I saw had paneled walls. Prices were over $200.00 a night. They stated they were trying to cater to the fisherman. Seemed like very nice people.
When I renewed my TU Membership I clicked on the link in Dustin Scott’s e-mail and got the “Thank you for renewing your membership” e-mail back within a minute. Could it be that the only people that got the confirmation we the people that went through Dustin Scott’s link?
I have a thought on how we could let more members signup for the lease access. I fish only during the week. Could we have a second sign up for only during the week. Make the tags a different color w/ wording on the car tag that says mon thru fri only. There are probably a lot of our retired guys like myself that would be interested in this to allow more people to sign up without having to many people at the leases. What do you think?
Just thought I would mention that there are other species of fish in the guad. Besides trout.
l went to Maricopa on Tuesday to see if the carp have come down to the bridge like they did last year. No carp, but did catch a small rainbow about 10” or 11” long. Too bad I caught him on my 5 wt Sage SP+. Way to much for a 11” trout. My rig was set up for the heavy carp 12 lb tippet and 2” goldfish colored Mister Twister grub tail like last year. Will try for them one more time next week.
Plan to try for Bass and bluegills until the temps start staying in the 90’s then wait for fall weather. I am going to convert to my summer fly fishing rig. I have a 9’ 3 wt redington trout rod using a 4 wt floating line and 4 lb tippet for dry flies. This is the rig I used with the Wilcox special that worked so well on the blue gills a couple of weeks ago. There can still be slot of fun out there until the weather gets to the 90’s.
Hopefully someday one of our guy’s can show me how to post photos and links to our site.
I went back to the river (Caps) to access the river. The trout maybe gone for the most part, but it seems other bigger fish are moving into these waters. I caught a bluegill about 3 to 4 in. Long and as I got him close to me a much bigger fish came up and grabbed him about 8 ft in front me. The fish then let the bluegill go and disappeared. It looked like it was a large mouth bass.
I had another large fish clear water about 20 yds away and this to looked like a large mouth.
I also saw flashes of a couple of larger fish in the water 10 to 15 feet out in front of me.
I tried 3 other dry flies, but nothing performed like the Wilcox Special.Fished CVC Sun the 28th. Was able to catch (4) rainbows between 7:00 am and about 9:30 am. Seemed to slow down after that. Some of our guys commented that it was getting harder to get bites. I took water temp. and it was 64 deg. Might have something to do with that.
I am not familiar with a fish called a common. This fish known by another name?
Looked up a red horse sucker, but they don’t have the dirty orange belly. If they are out there it is a good thought. He fought like a big carp or sucker.
The five times I saw this guy he was never closer than 25 yds. The very last time I saw him he was on the other side of the bridge (60 yds ). Never got to see the lower 1/3 of him. He was definitely not a stripper. Any more thoughts would be appreciated. -
