Would like some help in identifying a fish. I started fishing one of our year round sites about three weeks ago. The fish I would like help identifying is 18” to 24” long. He has a very dark green back with a dirty orange belly. When he feeds off the surface he comes almost all the way out of the water. I have had him on my line three times, but he always manages to get free. The first time I had him on he felt like a normal good size trout, but as soon as you set the hook he takes off down stream and is so powerful that he will keep taking line until he broke my 6 lb tippet. The second time I had him on I used an 8 lb tippet, but he again headed down stream until he again broke the tippet. The 3rd time I had him on I tried a 10 lb line for a tippet. He again headed down stream and kept pulling until he pulled loose. This guy is probably the strongest fish I have ever had on my line in the 40 years I have fished the Guadalupe. Lastly he like to hang around and under the bridge. I caught him all 3 times on a 2” grub tail just bumping along the bottom in the current. I tried catching him Thursday, but he seems to have moved on. Anybody have any ideas what he could be?

    Jumbo,
I read you vacation post with great interest. You mention the Wilcox Special many times and I see it sticking out of the mouths of many of the fish that you caught. Would it be possible for you to tell us how to use it in the Guadalupe River. I’ve noticed many of these 5” and 6” rainbows in the Guadalupe the last 3 weeks in the deeper pools at Maricopa. Would the Wilcox Special work for them.
On another topic I had a large Brown Trout jump out of the water in front of me after something floating on the water. He was at least 18” or 19” long.
Excellent story. When reading them you almost feel you were there.

About a week before the COVID Pandemic started I got the bug to get a new fly reel. Being as I am retired and on a fixed income $150.00 or more for a fairly good reel is not in my budget. I decided to look to the internet under fly fishing reels to see what would come up. While scrolling do the list I started to see all these reels with names I had never heard of. I found most of these reels were made in China. I am a sucker for gold anodized fly reels so when I came across this one particular reel I just had to find out more. This reel is made by a company called Anglers Dream and the model name is “Rider”. It is machined from a solid block Of aluminum. All the internals are stainless steel and was gold anodized besides other colors. It was only $56.00. Well for this price I thought it was worth a shot. I ordered the 7/8 size as I like a larger reel. The reel came during the first week of the Social Distancing order so I thought I would go out to CVC just as the sun was coming up as I know not many of our guys like t get up that early. I got there just as it was starting to get light and was the only person there except for 3 large deer standing in the middle of the river. For a $56.00 dollar reel this thing is unbelievable. It is extremely smooth and has a likewise extremely smooth and easy to adjust disc drag. After catching 4 good size rainbows with 1 around 24” long I was blown away by the performance of this reel. Fit and finish are also fantastic. It’s like a piece of jewelry. Time will tell if it holds up. I have now used this thing twice a week for the last 4 weeks and so far it’s been flawless. I’m not big on Chinese products , but for me on a fixed income and this reel costing on $56.00 I could not pass it up.
I went to the river for the last 4 weeks with the intent of practicing social distancing, but could not find anybody around to practice with.

Was able to fish Maricopa today. Water felt cold so I checked temperature and it was 58 Deg. At 10:00 AM. Was there all by myself except for a pair of ducks and a pair of geese that flew by very close. Seemed they did it deliberately.

Checked the water temperature at 7:00 AM on 03-30-20 at CVC. The temp was 65 Deg. Caught (2) rainbows before 7:30 AM. After that nothing?

Fished CVC on the 27th. I caught (2) rainbows. 1st fish was caught about 7:15 am and the 2nd one caught around 8:00 am. Fished till about 11:00 am with no further hits. Both fish caught on a hairs ear about size 15. Plan to go again on the 30th before CVC closes for the year. Will get there about 7:00 am and start fishing as soon as I can see to get in the water and not trip over my own feet

I fished CVC for the last 3 weeks. I caught (8) there three weeks ago, (4) two weeks ago and (1) this past Monday. I still saw a good number of fish swimming in the water, but could not interest any of them with anything I threw at them. I think this must be because of the rising water temps. Anybody know what the water temp is now. Probably need to start fishing farther up stream.

I have been a member of GRTU for 25 years. I totally agree with every word “Jimbo” has just posted. So come on guys. Let’s remember why we belong to GRTU. We all like to catch fish ,but it’s not the most important reason. If we posted all the information that many people have been whining about there would be so many people catching and keeping the fish we stock that there wouldn’t be anything left in the river for us to catch and release.

    Jimbo,
I looked at the E-Mail again and noticed that they resent me an old posting from October? So I guess that flow increase was the one we had a couple of weeks ago. Sorry for not noticeing the old date on the article.

    Jimbo,
I just got a E-Mail from the city of New Braunfels (I subscribe to new flashes from the city) that the Canyon Dam flow rate is supposed to increase to 3000 FPS on Friday. Will this effect our 2nd stocking? Can we verify that the flow will increase to 3000 FPS?
