I agree that John can be difficult at times, but most of the time he is just a cantankerous senior citizen 🙂 that has his own view of the world. I remember when I met John years ago before GRTU started stocking his property and came under his scrutiny for the first time. I had walked up from Whitewater and was fishing the hole that runs through his property when I hooked a nice rainbow. From the bank, John watched me with interest as I landed the fish and then took the time to revive the fish before releasing it back into the water. I then moved upstream to continue fishing. On my way back downstream, John was still out on his property and quizzed me on the catch and release philosophy for trout fishing he had witnessed as he himself is a conservationist. We had a nice conversation and he commented on the issues he had with the folks that use the river behind his house. His number one complaint was the trash left behind, then the noise from the tubers, the people that harassed the ducks he was raising at that time and the lack of respect people had for his property. Over time he has gotten less forgiving with the folks in the river here and not sure why that is, but for the most part he has always treated me fairly when I respected him and his property. The issues some of you have brought up surely are a problem, but you know since he is a small business owner maybe he was just having a bad day and was lasing out. My 2 cents is if you find yourself in a situation where John is in his confrontational mode, just move on upstream and let him talk to the wind.

Just to add my two cents.
As all of you have stated: some days we catch numerous fish and others are a challenge, but we live for the opportunity to participate in our sport on one of the most beautiful rivers in the south. This year has been interesting and has been different from previous years especially, with the clear water. I have noticed that like usual shortly after stocking the fishing is very good with trout in nearly all the usual spots, but within a couple weeks they become quite elusive and one has to really hunt to find them. This year I have found trout in many very different locations from days past and have found some of the honey holes from the past to be barren. The water clarity has made our river very challenging and recently noted that am now having to approach the water with a higher degree of stealth to avoid spooking the fish, kind of like a “real” trout stream. While Jimbo experiments with dry’s and many of the new creations from Matt and Alex continues to evolve his Czech nymphing techniques with any assortment of new fly combinations, we all have a great resource that should be enjoyed by all. Tight lines.

Historically speaking, the last stocking of the year usually has the lowest turnout of members. Reasoning being that the excitement has worn off for many with putting fish in the water. Yes, usually members are given ~ 2 weeks notice about a stocking, but sometimes it just isn’t possible. I commend all those that did show up and thank them for their assistance – tight lines 🙂
As far as where the fish were stocked, at the last stocking of the season, the fish are usually spread out at all sites with a higher percent being put in at the upstream locations because water temperatures remain cooler longer at these sites.
See you at Trout Fest

I raised the issue with the temperature monitors back in May of 2019 and as you can see the problems has still not been resolved. Not sure what the problem is since when I raised this issue at the October 2019 meeting and was told that all that was required was to update some links to the stream probes and some additional house keeping to match the old information with the new site. If I would have to guess would venture that it is more involved than originally thought and since these are volunteers doing the work with the web site can only hope they can get it done before the summer temperatures rise.

Found that using the insert photo button on the submission form works great and is very easy to use. Just click on the insert image/edit icon (last one above next to the chain) , insert the location of the photo (I just used a picture on my c:/ drive), and finally just put in the size dimensions, use 650 for best results. You will also notice that the picture can be made larger or smaller by clicking and dragging the corner.
Happy posting.

Nice post. One question: since once you pass Whitewater the property upstream between there and JDL is posted, how did you get there? Reason I ask is because in the past a number of the homeowners on that side of the river complained about being on their property; unless with the low flow rate you where able to stay in the water. Please advise.

OK, so now we have some temperature gauges working, but cannot look at graphs for temperature duration’s or logs. In addition, there are no flow rates or lake elevations provided, weather data is “not available”, water temperature vs distance graph is not usable, and water temperature measuring stations graph is blank. So what gives? This is the poorest condition this site has had since I joined GRTU many years ago. Is this how we want the organization to be viewed by existing and perspective members? It is a shame that since the redesign of the website that all these once important and informative sites have just gone down hill. Hopefully, someone on the board will take notice and these things will be fixed before the new season.

Ok, now that the flow has been reduced to 200cfs the need for the temperature monitors has increased dramatically. Can someone update the status of the river temp monitors? Since is end of July and these monitors have been out of service for almost a year, I would hope that these will be back online before the winter and the new fishing season.

Thanks for the update Jimbo.
I agree that all the rain we had has messed with the cold deep water, but the good news is that we have water and lots of it that is still around 61-62 degrees at the dam. A far as flows dropping, it doesn’t look like they will change much anytime soon with over 11k acre feet to go before we hit pool – I actually was expecting the Corp to increase flows to over a 1000 this week because of the high lake level – 910.39 this morning, and they still might, but all indications are that will say at current levels. Maybe the tubing outfitters are influencing this since they are having a banner year only time will tell.
