The snails are one of the main food sources.

    My setup

I put in a 4-6 inch tag of flurocarbon about a foot above my big fly with either a triple surgeon’s or figure 8 knot. (Figure 8 knot is stronger)

I run a small fly on the tag, and the larger fly on the bottom.

    Why?

It tangles a lot less that an inline rig.
It also allows the bottom and top fly to ride at generally the same depth. I use this on both standard indicator and euro nymph rigs.

    Fly combos are endless.
Studies show that the guad fish generally feed on the bottom and less in mid and top water column.. Stomach samples show a large amount of snail, some caddis, some cranefly, midge, mayfly and then other…

So.. i like tungsten 14, 16 mop flies in cream, black, and chartreuse a lot as it covers snails and caddis, and crane fly larvae really well. Then a small midge off the tag.

    Your mileage may vary.

Happy to float with you sometime. Whitewater to Rio is a decent intro.

Im always up for getting out. Im 51, generally fish during the week. 541 610 3164.

Based on today’s experience, the fish are uneducated. Euro nymphing was really good today.
