FWIW, I just renewed my Texas fishing license online. The whole process took about a minute, with nary a glitch.

You make good points, Jimbo, even though I disagree.

Perhaps we can agree on two minor tweaks to the current plan.

    1.  Make the sign-up date on a weekend.  This would allow people who work (some work on weekends, but fewer than during the week) more time to try to join.

    2.  Have some kind of time signature that records when someone tried to sign up.  That way, if there is a snafu and one can’t complete the sign-up progress, they will have, in effect, reserved their place in line.

Lastly, you’re right:  it’s wonderful that we’re even having this discussion.  Congratulations to pioneers like you who have brought us so far.

If anyone is reading these posts, I think that Ron would make a fabulous addition to the board.  He’s a curmudgeon who deeply loves the river, not to mention one hell of a fisherman.  This is precisely the kind of person we need on the board!

    Thank you, Jimbo.

I really appreciate what you and Dan have done for our fishery.  I can’t imagine how difficult it must be to acquire and maintain leases.  Your hard work is much appreciated.

Like you, I’m up at the crack of dawn lease day.  However, this year, it took me hours to finally get through.  If I had had other commitments, I would have been unable to obtain LAP membership.

That is why I think that people who have supported the LAP program for years should be given the right to join first.  It would be a shame if we had the same traffic jam this coming October as we did last year and, as a result, many faithful supporters of the LAP program were shut out.

Thanks, Jimbo.  I hope you have a great time in the Rockies.

I would like to suggest some kind of “pre-registration” for long-term LAP members (say, people who have been LAP members for the previous five years).  I know that we need new blood, and that new members keep LAP vibrant, but it is really not fair to those who have supported the program for years to be edged out by young people with more nimble computer skills.  The best thing for LAP is a mix of veterans and newer members, but we do owe the veterans (I’m being self-serving here) some kind helping hand in getting signed up, especially if the system suffers the kind of glitches that made registration so frustrating last year.

I guess you have your answer, Ron.

If mealworms aren’t your cup of tea, then the only other conceivable option is to go radically traditional and sling some wet flies: https://currentseams.com/2021/06/17/farmington-river-report-6-17-21-wet-fly-wizardry/.

It is ironic that a comp in Vermont was cancelled due to high water temperatures while the Guad is still fishable.  Let’s hear how the Farmington is.  There’s a guy there –Matt Wettish, the Mealie Master — who fishes meal worms on a spinning rod with 2lb. fishing line.  I hear he catches a few.

    Hi Scott,

Nice to see a post from you.  I don’t fish a Dorsey much, so I don’t have much experience.  But, I imagine a Euro-type cast, where the backcast describes an oval, might be what you need.  You can see what I mean here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ydhG94eq1UA.

    Take care,

I know that you asked for Youtube channels, so I apologize for utterly derailing your post, but I find the fly tying tutorials by Bill Seitz on http://coflyfishers.org very interesting.   Bill has influenced my fishing considerably with his flies and his adherence to drop shot nymphing.

Thank you , JC, for this great idea.  It really helps liven things up during these doldrums.

I’ll add one Youtube channel I particularly like:  George McGrath’s Gundog and Fly.  I guess I have a soft spot for Irishmen with long beards.

Just voted.  You’re currently ahead by a nice margin.  Good luck.

You’re not kidding.  The number of cars parked past the last No Parking sign was often prodigious.

Do you think that a lot, if not most, of our fish were kept, or are they still there but super shy?

My experience has been very similar to yours, Dana, with the proviso that I’ve only fished Whitewater once this season.  Last year I had great luck in the fast water.  My one excursion this year drew a blank.  That one time I went up to JDL and caught a few, but not the numbers of years past.

That mussel looked a lot smaller in person (or mollusk).  Makes me wonder how big the trout was before it was photoshopped.
