The new page is fabulous.  I applaud all the work Dan has done to make it happen.

There is one small issue (about which I’ve already communicated with Dan):  the temperature gauges don’t match up with your description of them.  There’s no Rio or Rocky Beach, and one says that it is reporting the temperature at # 5/ Potts, even though these aren’t the same site.

But this is a quibble.  The main point is that the new Flow page is wonderful and Dan is to congratulated for making it happen.

Most of the sensors are working, again.  Thank you, Dan, for your kind assistance.

Has anyone taken water temperatures at the dam, Maricopa, or Whitewater lately?

I realize that the people who run GRTU are volunteers, and I’m second to none in my appreciation of their incredible work, but it would be nice to have a bit more communication between the Board and LAP members.

    Jimbo,

Could you give us a summary of the Board’s decisions?

Thanks, Jimbo.  I’m curious about why there will be a discussion.  Is there an argument to be made against temperature monitors?  Or is the topic of discussion whether we will use Hobo or some other sensor?

There’s lots of water flowing into Canyon Lake (it was over 900 cfs at Spring Branch not too long ago).

It’s now 1500.  Can that be right?

The flows are really up.  389 cfs last time I checked.

Two outings ago, I tried a version of the New Zealand wool indie that George Daniel likes.  I say “version” because I used embroidery yarn rather than wool, but it worked pretty much the same.

I didn’t stick with it for long, but I did get two fish using the method with a single nymph.  What I liked about it was that it was possible to cast across stream and still fish upstream.  I’ve always felt that, everything being equal,  nymphing upstream is best because one avoids fishing across conflicting currents.  Of course, it’s possible to do this with a Thingamabobber-like indie, but the George Daniel-Pat Dorsey hybrid is a lot more delicate and sensitive.  It might get a bit more of a trial next time I brave the Guad.

    JC,

That’s really disheartening.  And, I don’t mean the lawless fishermen, I mean you using an indie.  I had greater expectations of you.  The next thing you know you’ll be using a pegged egg.

Jimbo is right.  I’ve caught my share of juveniles in the upper river.  I get a warm feeling knowing that we have trout that have known no other home than the Guad.

Finally, I found your previous post interesting for many reason, among which is your success using one nymph.  As we’ve talked about, Pat Weiss typically uses one nymph and in one of his PSU videos, George Daniel says that unless fish are feeding mid column, he prefers fishing with just one nymph.  Last time I was out, I ended up fishing just my pink beaded Walts and did quite well with it.  Were you using one nymph this last outing?

Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.  And sometimes denial is just denial, Sigmund.

I’ve been fishing pretty much the way I always do, once a week and alone.  Only now the way I normally fish is called “social distancing” so I’m not a miscreant, I’m socially responsible.

I’ve caught fish in the usual places, including the HOA pool at River Bluff.  Numbers have gone up and down, but there are fish to be caught.

I’m sorry to hear that you’re home-bound, Jimbo.  This plague too will pass, and I’m sure you’ll find your beloved mountains even sweeter than usual.

And, JC, have you seen this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rSx917pZNao&t=1010s?  It’s clearly not comp-legal, but if George Daniel is a fan, then there must be something to it.

Yes, Jumbo is a masterful nymph fishermen, and one of the keys to his success is combining all the elements of nymph fishing to produce great drifts in the most productive zone of almost any river, near the bottom.  He also has what all the great fishermen have:  a sense of where the fish are and what they would like to eat.  Add to that his unfailing generosity, especially with those less talented than he, which is almost everyone, and you have the face and heart of the Guadalupe.
