    Dana,

I suggest that you find the deepest and fasted water in the area that you’re fishing and concentrate on that.  And be sure that your nymphs are getting down close to the bottom.  I’ve seen a few fish rising, but all of the fish that I’ve caught have come from that cushion of slower water that’s eight or so inches above the stream bottom.

    Hello Dana,

I’ve found most of my fish in fast, relatively deep water.  Given the flows, there aren’t that many places where such water exists, so that might limit your search a little.  And, btw, you don’t have to wade far from stocking sites to find water that is lightly fished.

And, as opposed to Kevin, last Monday I caught most of my fish from about 11:00 am to 2:00 pm, and full sun.  Of course, the riffly areas where I fished are somewhat immune to wide temperature swings.

The fish are definitely spreading out.  I had a great day today (caught around 26), but I had to go looking for them.  As Kevin says, they seem to have found discrete pockets to live in.  However, there are spots where they’re still stacked up.  I caught some in one of those spots, but it’s not exactly what Theodore Gordon had in mind.

They’re taking a good presentation.  Don’t worry about the fly; worry about showing it to the fish in a natural manner.

I was out yesterday and I lost my mind.  If anyone finds it, you can keep it.

Congratulations on the fish, Tommy, and on knowing how to take photo of it.  A photo of a fish in the net is much less likely to harm the fish than a “grip and grin” or, even worse, a shot of the fish lying on the bank.

And, I echo your sentiments about the future of our sport.

Like everyone, I’m excited by the prospect of a new bunch of trout in our stream.  I am a bit confused, however, by what the two truckloads represent.  Are we essentially doing two stockings at once, with only one more remaining?  Or are we dividing the number of trout in the first stocking in two, to spread them out, which means that we will have two more stockings in the future?

I’ve caught a lot of juveniles this fall.  Most of them have come from the riffles above the deep pool at Whitewater.  The rest have come above JDL.  Earlier this year, I caught a few below the weir at Maricopa.

JC is right:  the thickness of tippet only matters when it comes to speed of descent (and, to a lesser degree, on how much mobility a nymph has).  Trout can see 7x as easily as they can 3x, so visibility is pretty much a non-issue.

So, for example, when I Euro nymph, I am now using 5.5 or 6x because it helps my flies go down faster.  BTW, I think that even tippet diameter may be a bit over rated.  Even a light nymph (say 2.5 mm) on a detached piece of 5x will go down pretty quickly if you just drop in fast flowing water.  It’s the drag from the rest of the leader that keeps a fly from descending quickly.  So, some slack, as with a tuck cast, is probably more important than weight or tippet size.

And when I’m drop shotting, where speed of descent is determined by how much weight I have a the end of my tippet, I typically use 4 or 6 lb. spinning line.

    JC,

Did you park at River Rose and then wade up?  I bet the first couple of hundred miles are okay, but then it gets tough.

    Thanks for trying, Jimbo.

Thanks for looking, but I fear that either Poseidon has taken up Euro nymphing with it or one of the divers found it long ago.

I have caught trout as far downstream as the riffles above Potts.

I don’t know about below that because I haven’t fished there since last spring.

Thanks for the great information and great work.

Just one addition.  I talked to the folks at Rio Raft, and they told me that if a person comes early (i.e., before the office is open), parking is okay as long as the GRTU tag is clearly displayed.
