Temps look great, especially at #6. Minus 122.4 is prime trout fishing temperature.
July 9, 2019 at 10:27 pm #4372Thanks for the report, Scott, and for the beautiful photos. See you on the Guadalupe when you return.

July 3, 2019 at 2:49 pm #43506b no longer exists. Those of us who use the term simply betray our advanced age.
It is also known as Lower Rocky Top. It’s the riffle downstream of where the river splits into Mushroom Rocks and Redhorse Run, which is below S-Turn Rapids, which is below #5.

July 3, 2019 at 11:28 am #4348That fish looks a lot like several I’ve caught. The farthest downstream was at 6b. The others were near Kanz.
June 25, 2019 at 2:24 pm #4336Could have been a brown. To be sure, I assumed it was a rainbow, so perhaps my assumption influenced my perception. At any rate, it’s good news.
June 25, 2019 at 12:07 pm #4334It is strange. But, like I told you when we chatted last Sunday, I caught a 5″ rainbow (I was pretty sure that it was a rainbow) at 6b a couple of weeks ago.
June 21, 2019 at 6:14 pm #4325I agree with JC that we would be kicked out college if we called what we did an “experiment.” It was, at most, an interesting game.
I was out today and played the same game with myself. I fished about half the time with a drop shot rig and half with a FIPS-type Euro rig. Today, the Euro rig ruled. I ended up with about 19 hookups, most of which were on the Euro rig.
But, more important than the “experiment” was another kind of comparison. It occurred to me around the middle of the day that I enjoy the Euro rig more than the drop shot rig. There are many reasons for this, but it boils down to simplicity. There is nothing less fussy than a Euro rig: just two flies, one on a dropper. No split shot. No indicator. Just the flies and a sighter. I really like that.
Leaving #5, I ran into Jimbo. It was great seeing him, and we chatted for a while. Jimbo is a superior nymph fisherman, but his heart, at least it seems to me, belongs to dry fly fishing. Mine belongs to nymphing, and my heart beats fastest when I hook a fish on a perdigon nymph because the sighter paused almost imperceptibly.

P.S. It was nice running into you, Scott. Hope you enjoy your new rod.
June 20, 2019 at 11:31 am #4321I see that the headless fisherman is a big hit around here.
That was a nice fish, btw. The one I had on, not so much.
June 10, 2019 at 3:06 pm #4314Yes, congratulations, Scott. Retirement and a box full of perdigons will make a man happy.
Now, for the bad news. We just got an email to the effect that flows will be increased to over 800 cfs starting today. They will decrease them over the weekend, but that implies that they will raise them again next week.

June 9, 2019 at 2:51 pm #4311Yes, it’s a conveyor belt of free beer out there. There’s also something comforting about being asked “Any luck?” and “What are you catching?” every few minutes. But my favorite activity is watching an armada of connected tubes bearing down on me.
June 5, 2019 at 11:10 am #4304You clearly weren’t at River Bluff on Sunday. The hatch was thick and loud. But the fishing remained good in spite of the revelry.
June 5, 2019 at 8:05 am #4302We got a subsequent email saying that the flows would remain at around 350 for the foreseeable future. Perfect for fishing and, alas, for tubing.
May 24, 2019 at 8:43 am #4273Thanks for the report, J.C. Sorry about the conditions and the lack of cooperation from the trout. Looking forward to Part II.
