I hooked them, but I returned them unharmed.
Needless to say, we must do the same with all our trout (except in April Fools’ Day stories).

April 1, 2019 at 5:22 pm #4088That’s the funny thing. Most people assume that fish this size feed exclusively on meat. But actually, I was using a size 16 nymph, a Butano Perdigon. Lucky for me, I had tied it on a stout hook and I was using Trouthunter 5x tippet. Having said that, I don’t have to tell you that landing it was mainly luck.

April 1, 2019 at 1:04 pm #4083Nice fishing with you (and your friend too), Scott.
If you want to try Euro nymphing, a Synicate 10′ 3 wt. is a good way to start and not break the bank. You can get one here (plus a lot of info and products): http://www.tacticalflyfisher.com/syndicate-pipeline-pro-series-competition-fly-rods/.

March 26, 2019 at 10:17 pm #4070Thanks for looking, Jimbo. I’ve given up on that rod (not that I wouldn’t be ecstatic if it were found; but I have no expectations that it will). The water has been very clear lately. It makes the river so beautiful.

March 22, 2019 at 10:12 pm #4052I really enjoyed fishing with you, Ron. The day was glorious and the fish things of beauty. I look forward to our next outing.

March 22, 2019 at 5:44 pm #4046Glad you’re okay. I had something very similar happen to me about three months ago above the island at Whitewater Camp. But, as opposed to your incident, my boots never separated and I was quickly heading to very deep water. I survived, but I needed a good deal of luck to do so.
Here’s part of my Dec. 16 post describing the event:
“As I was wading, somehow my wading shoes got attached to each other. I suspect that the one of the little hooks on my waders that keeps the garter in place got loose and attached itself to my other boot. So, I was wading in swift water with my feet bound together. I flailed around for a while but, luckily for me, I saw the island coming my way and I porpoised to it and, again with a lot of luck, managed to grab hold of a root and pull myself up. I had more good luck because a friendly person in a boat came down to me and ferried me back to shore. But, in order to get to the island, I had to let go of my rod.”

March 11, 2019 at 12:18 pm #3968Given that you want to access the river in a lease that will soon expire, my recommendation is that you start at Pott’s and wade up to #5. There’s lots of good water in that stretch, not to mention a ton of fish.

March 11, 2019 at 8:46 am #3963March 31, although some of the leases will still be available with some wading. I’d concentrate on the ones that will be a long wade to get to.
March 5, 2019 at 5:37 pm #3878The tubing is a wonderful idea.
I’ve “tied” a few using the tubing idea, but I built a small thread base on the hook, covered it with super glue, put the tubing with squirmy on it, and then lashed the tubing onto the hook with tying thread. Looks like it might work. Thanks for the idea.

March 2, 2019 at 5:24 pm #3851I can’t imagine that the use of that grip can be good for the fish. Why not simply remove the fly from the fish while it’s still in the water?
And, with the low flows we had last summer, I doubt if that that fish is a holdover.

February 28, 2019 at 6:15 am #3761I remember. I’m still wearing the same hat. And he was from a place a bit east of The Bronx.
Btw, the correct expression is “youse guys.”

February 27, 2019 at 10:47 pm #3753Sounds good to me too. Glad to see you two having a ball.
I was out fishing, sans camera, of course, the last day of Troutfest (i.e., last Sunday). I was also fishing a location that is secret beyond words, but, known to at least one immigrant whom I ran into at the parking lot at the break of dawn. This immigrant spoke surprisingly good English, albeit with a noticeable accent. But he’s a nice guy, and I have a soft spot in my heart for non-Texas natives.
At any rate, I had a stellar day. I hooked around forty trout, not to mention a lovely sucker, but bounced quite a few, so netted only around thirty. I say “only” with a wry smile, since that is a fantastic day by anyone’s reckoning. Several rainbows went around 19″ and the fish of the day was a brown of the same length. All of the fish were healthy, nicely colored, and feisty. All in all, a wonderful day.
