There are usually three stockings per season. If I remember correctly, the announcement is usually a week or so before the event. The last couple of years, the first stocking has been a double load of fish, so it lasts longer. But, you don’t have to stay for the entire stocking and, if you do, you’ll be done by 1:00 pm or so. You’ll learn tons about the river, its fish, and angling techniques at a stocking, and it’s a lot of fun.

November 2, 2024 at 8:20 am #16793By far the best scouting trip would be to attend the first stocking. By doing so, you’ll help the river and the organization, learn where all the leases are, and get the chance to talk to a bunch of fine anglers.

October 27, 2024 at 10:53 pm #16777If you’re learning to Euro nymph, I wouldn’t worry about the fly. Use a size 16 natural color Walt’s, on a jig hook or not (it doesn’t matter), with 3.5, 3, 2.5, and 2mm beads, and then worry about what really is important: perfecting your drift.

October 27, 2024 at 12:51 pm #16776I had the same problem with an earlier version of Korkers with BOA. The ones that I bought last year open very wide; wider, in fact, than my Simms boots.

October 17, 2024 at 8:13 am #16740Good stuff, Jimbo. Let me add a technique I use to revive fish that don’t seem to be quite ready to swim away on their own. I got this from Ken Tutalo, a guide on the Delaware River in NY, and it makes a lot of sense. Position the fish in the net so that it’s facing upstream and near the surface of moving water. Now, with your free hand, churn the water upstream of the fish. The idea is to create a lot of air bubbles that flow down to the fish’s face, giving it the oxygen it needs to relieve its hypoxia.

October 14, 2024 at 5:03 pm #16734I’ve been using the studded rubber soles and they grip very well on the Guad. I have felt, and studded felt, but the studded rubber soles have held up for over a year now.

October 14, 2024 at 1:08 pm #16732Remember that with Euro rod, the weight designation applies to the tip section. Most Euro rods have a butt that is closer to a 5wt. Get a Diamondback 10′ 2wt or, what my friend JC prefers, a 10’10” 2wt., and you won’t be disappointed. I’ve seen JC land trout that share some genes with whales with that rod.

October 11, 2024 at 8:06 pm #16728Last year I bought a pair of Korkers Devil’s Canyon boots (one size larger than my shoe size) and I just adore them. They are the best boots I’ve ever worn. And the Boa system works beautifully.
I should add that I was somewhat reluctant to buy this pair of boots because I had worn Korkers about five years ago and the Boa system was difficult to use. I was reassured by a number of people that this was a problem that had been addressed. It has been. The Boa system on my Devil’s Canyon boots is a breeze to use and I can’t tell you how relieved I am, after a long day of fishing, to know that I don’t have to mess with the intractable nature of wet wading boot laces. Plus, during the day, it’s very easy to tighten laces that have gotten a bit loose.

October 8, 2024 at 9:58 am #16715You’re right, Jimbo. The feeding program leaves us with a lot more, and a lot healthier, trout than we would have had without it. I should add that the people who do the actual feeding are among the nicest and most helpful folks one is likely to meet on the river.

September 19, 2024 at 8:45 pm #16702I really appreciate what you and the New Braunfels Fly Fishers do for our fishery. Thank you.
