I just stop going to this part of the river, I will be back until next season. There is more rivers and lakes where we can go and look for others fish spicies. I was reading that carp is very easy to spook and difícil to catch, but when you do it will give you a good fight to be landed. And it will be good to get my skills improved.

Just and idea ti keep finishing in the hot months. I went to Colorado River Bend state park for with bass, and it was great. I also try for bass and perch on blanco river. Just to keep fishing until is safe to go back to our river.

Remember is we take care and prevent of fishing when hot water is present we will be enjoying them when cold water is back.

    Mini competition the end

I want to thanks to JC for bringing this mini competition to GRTU, it was just amazing all that you did. I can not imagine how much work you put on it and besides the effort to wade all the beats to mark all of the 5 different beads. JC put that much that even give to everybody a BBQ dinner where all his family got involved.
I want to thanks to the leasing members to. I think, because they knew about the competition they did not went to the river. I was impressed of not seeing anglers in the river. Just some guides that I’m sure if next time we let them know, they will respect the beads zones.

I just want to mention how important are the markers, as is where the competor must be fishing, on our way back Bryson mention to me how frustrating he was to see rainbow just out side of the marker, of his second bead. Bryson can not put a feet or his line out of the marker. If he does it will be an illegal catch.

Back at rio on spot 29 where JC has the dinner ready was the opportunity to know all the participants and their comments, there where anglers that drove 14 hours straight from Colorado, Daniel has to drive back to Houston and catch his plane back home. All other need to fly back home.
This bring us how much interested anglers put to have the opportunity to do our mini competition.

It was very fan and interesting hear all off them on their own experience and enjoyment of the day.

As JC comment, there was a only woman competing From USA Team, and she was the winner with 8 scores. Her name is Madoka Myers, she was very enthusiastic about this mini competition and expressing her self of hoping it will be more on the future.

Well dinner was over and it was time to go back home. As I was walking to my car Ms. Madoka call me and ask me if I was tying my own fly, I tell her that I was just stating to tie and for the moment it was the wooly bugger. Ms Madaka want to show me her flies and for my surprise he took out 2 flies. A dry fly and a nymphing fly, she told to me this were the ones she use in ponderosa and land the fish to be the winner. She give the flies to me as a gift and a memory of the mini competition. I really appreciate this from her.

I put this 2 flies in a separate container, I plan to frame them as my day in the first mini competition on our river.

Thanks to everyone for let me enjoy and write this amazing day of a guy in the river.

    Mini Competition part 4

We are at River Bluff and it’s Alex second beat to taste the waters. As he is preparing to start as soon as his controller Daniel let the green go. Alex and Daniel are joking to make the ambient to be more relax.
Let me tell you that Alex it’s a talker he did not pass time with out saying something, “Daniel you are getting behind”, “Daniel did you write down my catch”. It’s fun just to let him talk and hear him.

As Alex got the time to star he put his fly right away in to the river. He start in the faster waters throwing his line a couple of time and move a few steps up stream and throw the line again a few times. He did this pattern all the way up and start again. At this point I remember what Trey told me the day before, Trey said, I like to start fishing down stream and finish up stream because the fish it’s most likely that will be facing up stream and I will be walking coming from his tale and will be more difficult to the rainbow to see me specially in clear days. So for this comment I guess I understand why Alex start down stream.

Alex has a lot of the same way of fishing that JC has. I guess they must be fishing together a lot. He bends his knees a little and he do not stop seeing that leader for a second to be able to see any movement of the line for as little it will be. His fly every time land in the water very softly, very gentle to make almost no disturbance at the entrance in to the water, it’s just bread taking. I do not need to see Brad Pitt with those long casting on his famous movie, this is the real deal.

As Alex was putting his fly in every inch of the fast water, I was talking with Daniel and his experience in the Guad, he was fishing before the same spot as Alex was doing at that moment.

Daniel was telling me how different it is from his town, not just the river the hole scenery, the land, the plants even how big the houses were. As we were talking a copple of college person got near to us and start asking about what we were doing, Daniel explain to them, it was a moment were we have about 8 of them at our surrounding When they left, Daniel make a comment that remind me how fortunate we are for out precious River and city. Daniel said “if I was back in Philadelphia and 2 person and them more he will be very uncomfortable and thinking if he needs to give his rods to them.

As we were enjoying our talk Alex yell Daniel are you putting attention? I got a catch, he has a nice rainbow in the net and with a happy expression in his face let us know that this mission it’s been going well. Daniel answer yes Sr. It’s already recorded in the sheet.

Daniel was saying how it was harder, is not just the difference in the rocks making it harder to wade it was the hardness of the water making the need to have heavier flys to be able to get to the bottom of the water. Daniel comment to me about it was difficult to catch the fish because the number were less that he use too and besides this because the fishes get hooked several times a day, they are more aware of the nymph used.

It was very interesting talking to him. Daniel is sponsored by orvis and other rod brands, he compites about 15 to 20 times a year and do it professionally.

As we were talking and Been observing Alex he yell “Daniel did you record this one” he was at the end of the upstream of the faster water. Alex do not run but he goes slowly but sorely walking in the bank parallel to the river his casting is delicate and his hand moves to get the line always were he is looking to land. After he finish all the inches of the faster water he finally put his boot to get wet, he waded to the bottom part of the weir and start casting here looking for his las part of the time to pass by.

I never saw Alex to be worried about the time, he was always cool like it was another day on the river.

Well like everything comes to the end and it was time for Alex to get out of the river and pack his equipment. It’s time to go back to Rio and enjoy the BBQ that JC has ready for us, this will be the time to met everyone.

Thanks Dick, it was a very fun day at the river. I got my rod in my car just in the case I will be boring during the day. I will take it and fish out of the area for the competitors. But let me tell you that it wasn’t the case, it was very interesting just seeing and learning different ways to fish, and if you add to this that I have the opportunity to talk to anglers from other states it was a well time invested in my passion.

Trey post the ones that you already catch in the guad.

    Mini competition part 3

As Bryson and I go back to the van, we were a little concerned about our next beat. Because I get confused beat number 5 (river bluff) with our # 5. We arrive to #5, we were looking for our next angler because Bryson will be his controller.

Alex arrive to #5 and told me I was on the wrong spot and clarify to me where to go. Thanks Alex.

I call JC to let him know we were on our way. JC was already in river bluff but must be missing a controller because he ask me if I can do it, I immediately respond YES.

I was the controller for JC, as his controller I will be in charge of the time and recording of any catch. Not much to say here because it will be a lot from my chapter one, just that JC put me in the move as I need to follow him as he was wading the river and running by land, this was my first time as a controller, as I was watching how it was done before I got an idea of what to do, I just make sure to keep a good distance from JC fishing area to not to spoke fish with me wading or my shadow on the water because it was a very clear day. I have the opportunity to enjoy watching him one more time, but let me tell you that he is focus on what he is doing, he literally runs from one point to another. He was on beat number 4 the upper weir part of river bluff. He was fishing where the river runs faster and did not left a single spot with out putting his fly. Then JC went to try the slower part of the river, He was anxious because there was an angles fishing there and couldn’t go to certain part of this beat, then bam this fellow angler got a catch, I can fill the frustration of JC because he was wanting to go to that particular spot.

As JC was fishing the calm waters I was looking at him, his rod start to bend and the fight began after this he was able to land the rainbow in to the net. By 1:43 if l recall correctly it was the time he put this rainbow fish in to the net and again the smile side to side of this precious moment.

JC continued to wade to cover as much area as he could. The time was passing fast and I start to yell JC 40 minutes left, 30, 20, 10, 5, 3 and at this minute his line stock on a rock, he pull the rod and the line snap. JC with a sad looking sed, well is all for today and start walking out of the river to go back to the gate of river bluff.

When we where at the gate Alex arrived, it will be his turn to test the water from the weir down and for Bryson will be from the weir up just where JC was fishing before, but with the luck that the angler was leaving the river too, so Bryson will have it for his self.

Alex was preparing his rods to get ready for the green go to start, Daniel Cisek, from Philadelphia, will be his controller. At this moment I was told that if I want I can go home because they will be able to give a ride back to Bryson. But you know! I will not pass the opportunity the see Alex fishing in the river and the other reason it was that after this will be dinner back at rio where JC family were finishing it and all the competitors will be there.

You are welcome Alex, I take back as a treasure for my self of having this experience to be with real fly fishers. Trey thanks for your coments I really wish I could be that good some day.

    Mini competition Part 2

We arrive to ponderosa were Bryson will take his turn in the competition. Something to be noted is that everyone have 2 rods with them ready with tow different set ups just to grab and go.

Bryson start walking to the edge of the bank put his equipment on the floor and waiting for Larry McCracken (his controller) to give the green light for time to start.

His bead was from the bridge to the edge of the little island. As he was ready to start he noted a big family who was throwing rocks in to the river at the little island. Also there where 3 guides rafts in the pool by the bridge that stay there rowing up and down of the river for a least 45 minutes. I can tell you that it must be very stressful for him.
He walks to the beginning of the beat by the island, but with the family there was no luck and I can tell you no fish either, all of them must be spooked by the family throwing rocks in to the river. He move to the pool by the bridge between the rafts and star acting there, he was using what loos like a perdigón at the end of the tipped with a dry fly at the top. As the rafts where moving he was doing so by the bank we’re the water runs faster and deep. His advantage for Bryson was that the pool was deep and up over his waist as he is use to back in Arkansas.

At this time I was talking with Larry who was picking up rocks and observing the bug live at the river. He did this several times during the hour and a haft of Bryson turn of fishing. Larry was amaised of the number and size of the bugs and his health. And he comment to me that we have a very good healthy live in the river. As we where talking we saw Bryson rod to bend and pick up a median size rainbow in his line to be land in to his fishing net to be his fist point.

After Larry write down the time of the catch we continue to talk and he was telling me to. how different it was the river of what he usually see. It’s clear difficult to wade for the rocks and hard to fish. He was telling me about his experiences as a guide back in Colorado and the outfitter business that he is running.

And then bang another catch by Bryson but this time it was a smaller rainbow, Bryson was way to exited that he pulled it out of the water taking the rainbow to fly in the air and the line gettin lose and rainbow let go the hook to land in the water to swim free. Larry said “Bryson that should count as a haft of point for your effort” obviously did not count because needed to be in the fishing net.

It was very frustrating for Bryson because for 3 quarters of his time he has the rafts side to side and catching about 3 fishes and spooking the rest.

The time comes and Larry start to yield, you have 30 minutes, 20, 10, 5, 3, 1 and your time is done. You can see the stress that this brings to the person because Bryson when he has 15 minutes puts his line in to the tree and snaps the line, his fingers were shaking to try to make the knots as fast as he can and with about 7 minutes left his ready to try a few more cast.

They sale hands talk a little about the experience at the moment and left to the next beat, River Bluff will be our next stop.

    Mini competition Part 1

We met at rio at 7:30 and JC introduced everyone and explained the rules and final organization to be transported to the beads.
I was a sponsor for Bryson Harpole, he is from Arkansas. We went to Lazy LL, Bryson was to control JC for his first fishing turn.
I was there just watching and talking. I have the opportunity to talk to Bryson on how different is our river from the ones he usually fish. He was talking about it was a small but complex river, the scenery of it, the rock and that for been watching JC looks a bet hard to wade it. His only concern was if there were deeper waters, because he is use to fish with the water all the way to his waist. I told him you will because his turn will be at ponderosa and by the bridge it’s deep enough for that.

But the most fun was to observe JC. I’m telling you if you haven’t had the opportunity and may have in the future don’t let it pass, specially if you are a Rocky like my self.

Watching JC how he wade the beat, as it was marked from upstream to down stream and he can’t pass thru that area.
JC wade every single inch of the river assigned to him, every current, every pool, he did not wait in a single spot as much as most of us will do. Something to be noted is that all of them were using euro method. His casting is something to watch, how it lands in the water nicely and soft to avoid spooking the fish as much as posible. He did not stop and think not even blink his eyes for the king of the drift of the line, when it was time to recast I noted that he pulled the rod like he was hooking a fish then recast.
JC request to the controller to keep him with the time, at 30 min then every 10 minutes. I can tell you that every time that a hear the controller call the time left, it was a lot of presión I can fill it my self. I can not imagine how was for JC.
Something to mention that I was obsessed with, is his position after he cast and the line lands softly in the top of the water. He curves his back, bend his knees an his eyes look the tip of the rod like he was aiming with a riffle. He was watching that tipped like nothing else exist between his rod, his line and the water looking to find that precious pull of the trout ready to be put out of the water and landed to the net to hear JC you got a point.
Finally after hard work and a lot of suede he lands one to the net and turns his head to let know the controller about the glory of have it in the net, his smile was superb from side to side.

But the time pass and comes to the end, the controller start with 10 minutes left then 5 then 3 then 1 and finally the end.

Pack everything because it was time for Bryson to let go wet his line in ponderosa and time to JC to be a controller for another competitor.

Something to be noted to the less experienced is that everyone left a fly in the tree branch and get stock with a rock and snap the line at lest once in the day.

Hi everyone, I was a sponsor on the mini competition. Thanks JC it was a great day in the river, great day of competition. Because I did not compite, I have the opportunity to chat to others competitors.

But I will like to fist ask my apologies for my writing, my first language is not English and I will do my best.

Secon I will like to tell my story from the day before. It may help another fellow fisher, as I call my self as “just a guy in the river”

The day before a met Trey in person for the first time, he is the only one from GRTU who I have talking since last season. I knew JC and Alex from the fish stoking in December.

I met Trey on rio, as we were talking about the mini competition. Trey was very careful about were to fish, because he will be competing, this make it different but fun. As we were in rio we start there wading un stream, Trey, his son and my self. There was nothing there so wade back to rio and try there. Trey got 2, but he was always watching me.

We move to the summit lodge, and wade down steam by where the river pick up a little faster, way before ponderosa.

As we were there because I already had lose 3 fishes for a lack of hook them properly, he explain and correct me in how to do it.
After this I catch my first of the day, but I lose 2 because of line snap. Trey was always observing me. He then explain to me that bring them fast to the net it’s good but I was doing it way to fast ant putting a lot of presión in the line because of me pulling the line to bring the fish and the fish pulling the line to go away. He also check my line set up, an explain to that the tipped it was to short and my flies where to close to each other. It was a very windy day and the current of the river will not aloud to let sink my fly. He help me to re-rig my set up and explain why.

After these I put in the net 2 more, but the filing of fighting the fish pulling in and letting go and pulling in, made it much easier and enjoyable.

Thanks a lot Trey, you change my fishing experience a lot. This experience will be complete with the mini competition observation the next day.

In my forest season in GRTU I just lad 2, I was frustrated but I did not give up, I’m determined to learn the fly fish word. My day with Trey was a game change, I land 3 big rainbow trout, lose 3 more and 2 of them snap my lane. For me it was a great day as any other day before in the river. When I got home my kid told me “ for the smile in your face I can tell that it was a great fishing day”

I write this to let know to all the new fly fisherman’s that do not be afraid and ask, go and fish with somebody. There are a very good and experienced fly fishers that will be happy to help. Our community of GRTU is the best and I’m glad to be part of it.

I try to be short in this story. Next will be my experience as an observation in the mini competition that was great and a lot to say.
