I completely agree Cody. I think actual local land owners would learn. A lot of them have a respect for the fishery. I think the biggest problem is vacation rentals. Many of these vacation houses are owned by people from all over Texas and the U.S.
What makes the problem worse is that some of these rental houses provide them spin fishing rods with power bait. I’ve seen it multiple times, and seen them keeping fish on a stringer multiple times. I have called/text the Game Wardens on these occasions, and they were actually able to catch a couple of them and write a few citations.
It be would kind of the vacation rental owners and/or managers to inform the guest of the regulations on that section of river. It could save the renters the cost of a citation for each trout they retained. Of course, anybody fishing the river should know the regulations before they fish, but unfortunately that is not going to happen.
I was just talking to somebody yesterday about a catch and release zone, how awesome would that be. But wishful thinking.
Thanks Jimbo, I figured if anybody knew it would be you. I wasn’t sure if somebody made the sign or if it was a legit sign. It’s weathered and looks real, but I’ve been faked out before. Whatever the case it looks perfect above my reels and my homemade rod tubes holder.
I fished just as dirty as J.C.
I caught equal amounts between the squirmy wormies, eggs, and mops.
I tried to fish Sunday evening, but my fishing partner pulled or tore something in his leg on literally his very first step in the water and ended our fishing day quick (tried to take the guy to an urgent care and he wouldn’t go ?). I went back next morning and netted 9 and lost one between 7am and 9am. Saw lots of fish with lock jaw. If you get multiple refusals with different flies, don’t waste your time. It’s hard to walk away, but go find fish that want to eat.
I was not at the stocking, I didn’t know such big fish got stocked. I thought they were going to be smaller this season. I didn’t pick up any less than 15-16″ with a couple at the 20″ mark and one about 23-24″.
Nice squirmys J.C.! I was trying to picture what they look like in my head when you’re explaining it the other day, it’s nice to see an actual picture of what they look like. That is pretty genius. I went through a handful of squirmy wormies last Monday after being torn up from trout. That design would have been great.
Nice job Bryant! Kinda like riding a bike, it all comes back pretty quick. Looks like your pretty much set to start the season! Like Drew mentioned, those perdigons are great in fast water, they do like a rock ( I think perdigon is Spanish for pebble). If the flows really go up this season, they can be killer. I only fish them in very select spots on the Guadalupe.
Why you got to be so dirty Drew? I have tied up a bunch of orange and pink and red squirmy wormies, but have never actually broke down and tied one on yet. I’ve never brought myself to fishing an egg either. This might just be the season where I get that dirty though. I bring hand sanitizer to clean my hands after touching a mop fly, I guess I could do the same with a worm or an egg.
Awesome Todd! Welcome to the deep dark rabbit hole that is fly fishing! It’s a great group of guys here on the forum and the Fly fishing community in general is pretty awesome. Very different from conventional fishermen in a good way. It’s almost like going back in time, guys on the river are usually more than happy to share what flies they are using, when you walk into your local Fly shop they usually know you by name, that type of stuff.</p>
If you need flies, you can’t go wrong with Drew. He ties some beautiful stuff, but also very effective flies.I fished a chubby Chernobyl with a small dropper a handful of times towards the end of last season and did great with that setup, I am sure you will find it will work great for you too on the Guad.
