Thanks Doug! Sorry, just saw your message. Purple works great on a lot of rivers. The Guad included.

Don’t beat yourself up too much. Fly fishing has a learning curve with many little tricks that come with time. There are so many variables that can make a difference. Fly selection, depth, and weight are only some of the aspects of hooking a fish.  Fishing with a float guide is one of the best ways to speed up the process. You get a much bigger picture of the river and can learn some areas to target. A lot of the guides will even stop and get out and wade with you and give you a few pointers. Every year on the Guad is different and this year is no exception.</p>

Jimbo, I fished last Thursday and had the same experience. The fish are totally still in hatchery mode and I think they get lock jaw with all of the traffic on the river. I to thought fishing on a  Thursday would avoid the crowds, but I was wrong. It looked like a holiday weekend.  I saw fisherman after fisherman spooking fish. Standing on top of every deep hole with their shadow over the fish, splashing around in slow water, ripping fly line off the water in the most dramatic fashion. I’ve also never seen so many drift boats!

The strong bite was early in the morning. I unfortunately did not have any cloud cover help later in the day. It was bitterly cold early though (24 degrees according to my truck). Had to fight ice on my guides and on the paws on my drag. All my fish early were on frenchies and red darts. After the bite cooled I switched over to a euro streamer and irritated them enough to hit it. I ended the day in the teens with a few fattys and a brown. Besides my brother and one other LAP member I met at Barking Dog, I never saw another bent rod despite a million people on the water.

Way cool! When my boys were young I figured if they could hold a bottle they could hold a rod. They are now 16 and 11 and are great anglers that aren’t glued to their phones or video games.

No better way to raise your lil girl then outside and on the water. Super cute pic!

Thanks Dana! Bull trout are actually a species of their own. They are in the char family and closely related to the dolly varden trout. You can see the white on the bottom fins (ventral and anal fins) just like arctic char, brook trout, dolly varden, and others.

I stayed in my travel trailer at Summit RV Resort last week and really enjoyed my stay. It was packed full with RVs and travel trailers, but it was still extremely quiet. They have some of the nicest and cleanest bathrooms an RV park can have. Full hook ups at each site. It’s on River Road almost in between S turn and Ponderosa. Dogs are allowed, they even have a dog park. Hard to beat for the price.

I told my wife the only pair of pliers that will properly dull the barb are $400 Abel pliers… She didn’t go for it.

Wiscoy, check your email spam folder. Sometimes the GRTU.org emails go to promotion or spam folders. There was an email on November 6th with all the details.

I got reservations for Summit RV resort over Thanksgiving weekend. I’ve never been there before but figured it was a good time to check it out early in the trout season. It  has 240 ft of River front. All of the RV spots are a bit off of the river, but they only charge 39 a night for an RV. 10% off of that if you are a good Sam member. I’ll post back on this thread after I stay there and let everybody know my thoughts on it.
