Euro rods easily land big trout with no additional stress. Like Alex said, they have the backbone of a 5wt or even a 6wt. I landed a beast last year on the Guad pretty quick on my 3wt.

On the flip side, they actually throw dries very well. The 3wt or 2wt line also lands really soft on the water. I think they are the most versatile trout rod out there.

<p style=”text-align: left;”>Tight line/Euro/Czech nymphing is by far the most productive trout fishing. That being said, it really shines in higher flows. Yes you are less likely to spook fish in slow-moving water like the Guadalupe seems to be this coming year, but it is harder to get a good driftbin slow water and especially further away from where you are standing. In some spots on the Guad you almost have to be standing on top of the fish. I really like the New Zealand style indicators to spook the fish less in low flows on the Guad. That being said I will still be Czech nymphing this year. You can fish some of the faster tailouts and some faster seams where typical fly fishermen would never even consider.

I have owned the Sage ESN HD 10’6″, Orvis Recon 3wt 10′, and the Orvis Helios 10’6″ rods, but sold them off as soon as I started using the Thomas and Thomas contact II. I haven’t fished a Euro rod yet that even compares. I own the Thomas and Thomas 3wt 10’9″ and also the 3wt 11’2″. I really like the 11-footer and slower water because I can get out just a little bit further. I am really curious about the new Helios blackout 11 ft though. Most euro rods are all going to do the job, but I get particular and want a rod that will cast well and have a really sensitive tip. The contact 2 has that. It is not as easy to cast with really light flies compared to some other Euro rods, but when you learn to load it right ( I even haul on my cast) it will do everything you want it to.

I use 20′ of the Cortland 12 pound camo Euro nylon void know to 4 ft 8 pound amnesia blood knot to 18″ 3x sighter clinch knot to tippet ring and typically no bigger than 5x tippet to a surgeons knot to my flies. I’m a huge Trout hunter tippet fan. Never had an issue.

As far as flies go, I’ll have to meet you on the river or one of the stockings to show you in person what I tie along with a confidentiality agreement.

<p style=”text-align: left;”>I actually learned to tie the kamershikin from the Dalai Lama himself.

Yeah, those purple mops are disgustingly good early in the season. I tie them on a size 12.

I typically throw orange kamershikins early in the season and move on to smaller giraffe midges as the season progresses, and then finish off the season with size 28 Italian purple mop flies ??

Thanks Jimbo! Sounds like the board made the only reasonable decision possible.

There are lots of older ones that have shown up to help with stockings. Some are really there for moral support, some help direct traffic. I have severe AS (autoimmune disease) and have been there for at least one stocking every year I’ve been a member. Those that show up are the ones that truly care about our fishery and appreciate what we have. It’s more than just fishing the river for these guys. Without those “worker bees” we would have nothing. That’s why I think if there is any priority given for early access to LAPs it should be given to them.

There’s been a lot of ideas thrown out there, some better than others, but most not realistic. I imagine the board will make the best decision possible. It probably won’t be one that makes everybody happy, but there are only so many solutions.

Having the ability to handle the traffic on the website I think is the biggest concern at this point.

Raising prices seems like a good idea, but the cost is already more than some could afford. I would hate to lose good fly fishermen because they can’t afford it, especially long time members or older members that are on a fixed income. I’ll pay whatever the cost, but that’s not fair for some others.

And maybe this year will be a bit different from last year. Last year was a strange year with Covid. There were lots of new fisherman because they had nothing else to do because of the virus. I met a lot of guys on the river that told me they had been skunked multiple times. I don’t know if those guys will be coming back again. Casting feathers isn’t for everybody and there is a learning curve. Maybe that’s just hopeful thinking on my part.

I do know this, I’m not scheduling any work 10/1 and will be glued to my computer until I get my LAP.

<p style=”text-align: left;”>I agree that something needs to be done. I think anybody that helped stock or any other restoration efforts this previous year should also be granted priority. Dan told everybody during the stockings to email him and let him know that they were there, so there should be record of those that helped. It seems like those that went out of their way to help our fishery should have a jump on getting a LAP this year. I know a lot that drove from hours away to help stock. There were four stockings, so everybody should have had a legitimate chance to help out at least once. I know there are some that probably couldn’t make it to any of those because of scheduling conflicts, but I would think that is a very small amount. Just my two cents.

I feel for long time members that missed out this past year. I don’t know if it’s possible to go back and look at previous years to know who these are, but they also should be granted priority.

    Awesome, thanks Kevin!

Sorry guys, gone on less than a minute.

I was hesitant to let out the secret of the olive fdybrdjug, but sometimes I feel like being a nice guy.

Joking aside, if I’m on the river and killing it on a particular fly, I’m more than willing to share with other guys around, and have been the recipient of the same courtesy. I am a bit reluctant to share on a pubic forum though. You never stop learning with this sport, it’s what makes it awesome, whether it’s the Guad, San Juan, White, Silver Creek, or any other trout river. Or even stalking redfish for that matter.

You got a great attitude John. If you ever want to meet up on the river sometime, shoot me a private message.

Ouch. It’s been a hard fish. And that hurts to get skunked when paying a guide.

I fished last Thursday 4th and Friday 5th and had to work for every single fish. I tried just about every one of my go to flies and ended up with 12 in the net including a palomino on Thursday, and 5 in the net before I had to leave for home at 10am on Friday. The fly of choice was an olive fdybrdjug. I saw lots of trout sitting in slow water not feeding.

Moon phases can have an impact, and the fish are also getting smarter. They’ve been seeing the same old eggs, worms, zebra midges, and typical flies that worked when they would eat anything earlier in the season.

I fished Thursday and Friday last week (4th and 5th). No tube hatch. Yet.

I haven’t fished since before the storm. But the fish are there and have to eat. If I could fish tomorrow I would.
