<p style=”text-align: center;”>Very well said Jimbo. I am in full support of those few that have a lil extra knowledge of some of the big ones. They deserve it.</p>
The hunt for hard to find and hard to catch fish is ultimately what most fly fisherman are after. It is what drew many of us to fly fishing in the first place. Fly fishing is much more technical than conventional fishing. Many of us were raised conventional fishing and moved on to buggy whippen because it brought a different degree of difficulty that makes the reward of catching so much more fulfilling. I feel sorry for those that only want to pull up to a location stocked full of fish to guarantee a catch without a developed skill as a “true fly fisherman”. If that’s all you are looking for, why did you even decide to fly fish in the first place? There is so much more satisfaction in taking the time to learn the water, develop proper casting techniques, and learning to think like a fish. It’s partly the reason some of us tie our own flies, because it brings a different degree of satisfaction to fool a fish on something you made yourself.Jimbo mentioned he didn’t want to sound elitist, but the fact is, we all kinda are. Not that we look down on conventional angling, but that we enjoy a more sophisticated, technical, and at times beautiful form of fishing. We also in general are more willing to help support and conserve the environment. Don’t get me wrong, I still love those days when I out fish my buddies or you can’t keep fish of the end of your line, but the days I remember most are the ones where I worked my tail end off to get lockjaw fish to finally eat something, or my first sheepshead on a fly, watching my kids learn the ropes, ECT.
Enjoy the comradery that’s not found in other types of fishing, enjoy the beauty of the outdoors, and let’s not forget why we really do this.
Like Jrcheno said, you can fish right in town in Pagosa. You can also drive a lil further up from Montrose to Ridgeway and fish the San Miguel. Beautiful area. Awesome river, but may be dirty and running high from snowmelt. The fly shop in Ridgeway is pretty sweet place and they can steer you in the right direction.
Big thanks to those that worked their tail ends of today! Your work is greatly appreciated! Wish I could have been there to help, especially since there was a lack of help. I really enjoyed helping stock previously and look forward to helping next year. I imagine there are quite a few that wanted to help today, but with many LAP members living 2,3, or 4 hours away, a one week notice makes it a bit difficult some to be able to help “last minute”. Thanks again to everybody that have worked so hard this year and today in particular.
