It’s taken down most summers. Potts is a seasonal lease and the owner of the property has asked at various times over the years that the sign be down because it’s not uncommon for lease members (and non lease members) to park there and access the despite the closed season.
The quick answer: in the river.
Longer answer: It is easier to tell you that the lease sites we didn’t stock this time that we had previously visited this season were Potts, Devil’s Playground, 3rd Crossing and Mt. Breeze.
Really long answer: I doesn’t really matter where we dumped the buckets because as soon as the fish get oriented in the river they will move upstream and downstream up to a couple of miles to make their homes. It is only in the first few days after a stocking that the fish really stay concentrated in front of the exact spot they were introduced. While most fish will stay closer to the lease sites (within a half mile), the locations where fish are grouped up immediately after being released is pretty obvious because there will be large numbers of people standing over the top of them with mixed success. This provides an opportunity for perfecting one’s combat fishing skills. You can also observe the osprey to get the most up to date information on where the trout are concentrated.
One of the factors the fisheries committee takes into account when planning a stocking is where on the river do we see locations that can hold fish but, for whatever reason, are not at the time when the stocking plan is being put together. Those spots get added attention on subsequent stockings. Typically after the second stocking those gaps have been filled in and there are fish holding throughout the river. The fisheries committee is taking into account the impending work on the dam this season and trying to get more fish in deeper water and is the reason for not stocking at Potts this time around.
Horseshoe Riverside Lodge continues to be listed as an annual lease site. My last conversation with the property management at HRL has them wanting to maintain an annual lease access with a caveat that they are installing a gate which will require permission to park past the gate; specifically each guest will be required check in at the office to be able to park and that parking will be subject to availability of parking spots. They are expecting to that their lot will be full this summer with motel guests, which might limit the availability of LAP parking spots.
If you want to fish at HRL, stop in at the office and speak with the person at the office.
I’m working to add an additional location at this crossing to increase the number of parking spots and will report back as soon as I have more information.
