    Brian,

I do think we are supposed to use barbless hooks, but all you have to do is pinch them down with some hemostats or pliers.  Very easy to do; you do not need to buy anything special.

Hope to see you out there someday and hope you had better luck than I did today…caught two trees, 3 sticks, and countless leaves….but alas, no fish.  Did see a couple browns though, so there is hope!

I have never used the 3 weight, so I am looking forward to doing so.  I have heard it is fun…

    Michael,

My plan is to go with my son, but if that falls apart I will definitely let you know.  I might be able to do a second if you are still available.

    John and Mhamlettster,

Thanks for the welcome and encouragement; nice to know there is a light at the end of the “newbie” tunnel.

Great advice on going to John and or Kelli.  I looked at both their website and Action Angler to go out with my son.  Had not picked one yet.

As for the question on setup, I have 4 rods that I have collected over the years, but no real “set up” yet.  I have: 9′ 9 wt, 9′ 6wt, 9′ 5/6wt, and 8′ 3wt.  My assumption is I would use the last two on the river since the first two are more suited for salt water.

Look forward to seeing you both on river.

Thanks Jimbo.  I will definitely sign up for a float trip.  My guess is I will bring my son so he learns something he may use versus just having my wife ride along.

I appreciate the info on spectator places.  I figure I will just go by myself and if I can find her a convenient spot, I will bring her the next time.

Thanks again for all the info.

    All-

I can tell I am going to like this group already…incredibly informative responses and you all sound like great people.  I look forward to getting out there and meeting you at the GRTU meetings and hopefully on the river.

It did not occur to me to do a “float” trip with a guide because I assumed, probably wrongly, that the majority of fishing was via wading.  I can see that floating would allow me to pass the majority of the LAP sites and talk to the guide on how best to fish them.  I see the guides provide equipment, so it would be good to see what they recommend using.  I have 4 rods that I have collected over the years: 9′ 9 wt, 9′ 6wt, 9′ 5/6wt, and 8′ 3wt.  My assumption is I would use the last two on the river since the first two are more suited for salt water.

    Questions:

Is 4 hour float enough to see the sites or do you recommend an 8 hour trip?

With the float the guides use, is one person better or should I bring my wife or son?  I would love to get my wife interested, but 35 years of marriage tells me she is much more comfortable being a spectator than a participant.  Would need Dana’s help on that one!

On the spectator sport aspect, reading the rules I know I cannot bring my wife to just sit on the bank and watch me the way she normally does when we are in Colorado or Utah, but do some of the sites have places that non LAP members can sit and get a view of where we are fishing?

Thanks again to all the provided advice.

Truly awesome.  My son lives in SLC so we did about two hours fishing near Park City.  Was great.  Can’t wait to go back.  Thanks for the pictures.
