    SOLD

    January 7, 2024 at 2:21 pm #16227

Heads up, I fished Potts on January 4th, and the German Shepherd that lives in the house next to the steps was out and unleashed. A bit disconcerting, if not outright threatening, to have a big ol’ unleashed dog barking at you when you come out of the river and top the steps!

    Good luck.

I plan to help out too. And, I’ll likely bring along one of my able-bodied Environmental Science college students who is interested in fisheries.

Pretty steady release of only about 50 cfs to maintain the fishery.

Catvet, I live in NB and have been out several times this season and caught one brown. One. That’s it. At one spot I can see 8 trout swimming around and I can dang near bump them on the nose with a fly and they won’t bite. I change flies, rinse, repeat, and still nothing. I gave the spot up to another guy and same thing. When he moved off another guy came in, same thing. No catching, just fishing.

A week ago a guide in a raft was sitting on a hole for over an hour and his clients got nothing despite the trout sipping flies from the surface. But, at another site an 11-year old was pulling them in one after another. When he moved off I moved in and nothing. I was flabbergasted.

Recently I drove up to Oklahoma and fished probably a total of 10 hours over a couple of days and caught one 8″ trout, nothing more. In previous years I could catch over and over both at the LAP sites and in OK, this year…skunked all around.

I think all of this is to say, that’s why they call it “fishing” and not “catching.”

The spillway at the Canyon Lake dam is free and stocked each week by TPWD. Wade out past the reach of the shoreline spin anglers, just downstream a bit, and fish the deep flutes in the limestone.

Glad I looked this morning too. I was going to feed some trout this afternoon, but the 760+ cfs is too difficult to wade in. Canyon mean water levels are here: https://waterdatafortexas.org/reservoirs/individual/canyon

This morning I paddled my 13′ sit-on-top up from Rio Raft to the weir at Kanz. The flows were about 550 cfs. Took about 20 minutes of not-too-difficult paddling–enough to keep you warm! I pulled out on the rock ledge there below the high water mark at the Kanz weir and waded up and down the rock ledge that’s a few inches under water right now. No problem paddling up and wading. Wore my pdf since I was by myself (and I was wearing wading boots and waders). Another guy paddled up from Rio and pulled up on the bank about half-way between Kanz and Rio, one foot in the water per the guidelines.

I didn’t fish from the kayak, it’s too difficult. The boat’s just transportation. But if there’s a place to tie up on the shore and wade, that’s NOT in someone’s front yard, it’s not that difficult.

Planning on helping out again this year. So many fish!
