Justin,  Thanks for the offer but I next week is full of other commitments.  I am not going to make it to the river.  Good luck to you!

I can’t find the message or post but I thing CVC changed their gate code.  If 2020 doesn’t work, try 1976.

I am good with that plan or similar.  I agree that longevity, prior membership, participation, volunteer work, etc., could all be used in some way to help determine membership eligibility.    Long term members are critical to the organization but new anglers in the area should fit in somewhere.   There will be “winners” and “losers” in any process but think that having a process controlled more by criteria and chance than someone’s internet connection would be a move in the right direction.   I am in no way an expert in determining how the number of memberships are determined or the demographics of membership but have had several thoughts go through my head to include weekend vs weekday angler memberships,  allowing purchase of a certain number of day passes for those who travel great distances and only come to the Guadalupe a few times during the season, etc.  There are probably quite a few holes in these thoughts but somewhere there is a solution.

Not saying that my proposal is 100% right either. There are probably aspects I haven’t thought of.    I think we can both agree that there has to be a fair way out there to prevent current members from sitting and hitting refresh for two hours hoping to get in or to prevent new anglers or those new to the area from waiting for others to drop off the membership list in order to have the opportunity to enjoy their sport.    I am such a poor angler,  they could probably issue a second membership to someone else without having much impact to the fish population 🙂

I can’t agree.  I was a member for years and then had to move away due to a military move.  I am back in the area now and want to enjoy membership.  If the 850 slots are taken by the same 850 from last year, I would not get that opportunity.   I don’t think the apartment comparison is valid as housing is a requirement but an access lease is a luxury.   I am not saying that past members shouldn’t receive an advantage in a lottery.  Either give them more chances or save back 10-20% of the available memberships for new members.  That way you wouldn’t completely shut out transient populations or those who want to become that “essential resource” and mentors of the future.

Unfortunately that would cut out the people that didn’t get through this year for future years.   My thoughts would be a lottery where you get some credit for being a past member but also where someone new to the sport or new to the area would be able to “compete” for a lease.   National TU members would have a certain period of time to register for the lottery and be given an entry number.   These numbers could then be randomly selected.   You could create a system where past members would get two lottery numbers instead of just one.     You could also hold two lotteries, one for past members and then hold back a certain percentage of memberships for first time applicants.

Wondering if some kind of lottery system would work in the future.  Doesn’t seem like the current system is viable for the future with this kind of demand.
