    Candysnacker,

The guide who demo’d euronymphing to me in Broken Bow was using a euro-specific 3 weight rod but otherwise he was using a Rio euronymphing leader (which has the built in sighter) and tungsten flies. I believe his favorite was the Frenchie. So same setup but he had the euro rod which is longer and more sensitive tip. And if you see me out there Dec. 26th, me too with the new rod! Don’t tell my husband I figured out the new rod is under the tree!

Thank you ksinspections – no indicator just sighter. New to me just this trout season.

I laughed so hard at “fat girl needs a diet – not you the fish.”

I am just now getting into this but I am trying some quasi-euronymphing. I see the fly rod shaped box under the Christmas tree from my husband and I asked for an Orvis euronymphing 10 foot 3-weight so that is the plan for after xmas. That has reel and euro fly line included. For now, though I just thought I would try to begin to grasp the concept by using the Rio euronymph long leader with the sighter built in and my regular 8.5 ft 5 wt rod and reel and line. No split shot, only tungsten flies. Since I was fishing some the heaviest and craziest currents at Devil’s Playground for that fish, I just used a single tungsten pheasant tail nymph coming off 4–5 feet of fluoro from the Rio leader which ends in a tippet ring (love!). Trying to see what is going on with the sighter is challenging and I am still struggling but a guide at Broken Bow I bumped into and know demo’d me for 10 minutes his rig and setup and I was very impressed at the number of strikes he and I both got in a great hole in just a few minutes when I had been fishing the same place with what I thought was good success – he and I both tripled or quadrupled the number of strikes.

I am studying the Dynamic Nymphing book by George Daniel as well as the Modern Nymphing: European Inspired Techniques video (first one not yet second one) available on Vimeo with Lance Egan and another competitive fly fishing guy whose name I forgot.

There are some experts on this topic on the forum and hopefully they can chip in. I am trying to bring my catch rate up.

Thanks for the tips, gentlemen! Finally, got two trout on Sunday. One nice fattie 18 inches and one small state stocker! The latter was my first fish tight-lining on a pheasant tail nymph and the big gal/guy was on a tungsten olive WB.

Kevin and Alex, thanks for the great detailed info.  In addition, do you have any tips as far as actually techniques for prospecting? Do you literally grid out the water? I heard people talk about searching patterns….Any other general prospecting thoughts?

Kevin and Alex, thank you for the helpful info. Do you have any advice on the best way to go about prospecting when you don’t know where the fish are? I get bored of going to the same favorite spots from last year but when I go to new ones I have no idea beyond an educated guess reading the water on where they might be. However, in the two days out it hasn’t helped.

Also, the early morning bite you mentioned I assume makes sense with these fairly warm temperatures that the fish would be most active at the coldest time of day (light). As the season progresses, do you find there are any patterns to certain times of day coinciding with a good bite?

Christopher, I have lost my contacts. Please text me when you get a chance.

A friend and I fished River Road camp yesterday 12/1. I didn’t see Jimbo’s message above about RRC and water temps until now.

We did not see any signs of any trout but it was a nice area and had some bites from sunfish. Plus they have bathrooms and picnic tables which was great. Moved up to River Bank and saw some trout there. Lost a bigger one (18-20″) three feet from the net!

2 days on the Guad so far, 0 trout so far. Sigh.

Wow what in the world did you catch it on?

Felt with studs works great for me on the Guad. I use regular felt most other places. No falls yet in 2 years of heavy fly fishing but I imagine my time is coming…

Highly recommend the Korkers wading boots with interchangeable shoes. I have used the rubber soles as well.

Changing from rubber soles to felt last year changed my life.  I was slipping and sliding all over the Guad last (first) season with rubber. Now I love my Korkers and have used plain felt as well as now I have the felt with studs and feel quite secure now.

Jimbo, where is Brown Town – a specific spot at Little Ponderosa or an entirely different site? Thanks for the fishing reports. It gives me an idea of where I may get to someday when I get good at this.

Too bad – I was really looking forward to accessing that site but was waiting for water to calm down a bit. Thanks for the update!
