Beautiful box! You got a real talent tying and behind the camera. Every once in awhile my wife will let me use her Sony A7Riii and her macro G lens so that I can get some decent pics of flies. Shooting the flies is a whole another art in itself and one I’m not so good at.
A fly tying get together would be a blast. Maybe one session with some newbies and helping them out, and then another with guys a little more experienced.
I got to meet them last season. Very nice peeps. Unfortunately, $200 a night isn’t a crazy price anymore for a renovated hotel on a beautiful section of the river. Everything is expensive right now. Choice beef tenderloin steaks at my local HEB were 13.99 a pound last year and now 20.99 when I was there today. The Maricopa was outdated and horrible beds and were charging over $100 last year. They only thing they had going for them was the sweet property and friendly staff. Should be a pretty awesome place now. If they are catering to fisherman, I hope they make sure they provide a way to educate their guest on fishing regulations for that section of the river and proper fish handling. If they are from the Kern, they should be pretty well educated on caring for trout. Those Kern golden trout are pretty special.
Drew, I was kidding about the size 22 mop (I think that would be just a stand of chenille lol), but I was serious about purple mop flies. They are super dirty and I feel a little gross after touching them, but they are really good fly. I found purple in general can be killer on a fly. There’s also times purple can be a big turn off also.
I do know for a fact my purple mop flies are not even close to as beautiful as what you tie. That thing looks like a work of art. If everybody’s mop fly looked like that, I don’t think people would look down on them as much.
Drew, Dustin mentioned somewhere (I can’t remember) that they disabled the TU membership renew/sign up because it was slowing down the system during the LAP sign up. In an email sent out recently, he included a link for everybody ( because nobody was able to renew) to sign up or renew their TU membership.
So, there was no TU renewal during the LAP sign up.
I’m with you Drew, I fish I single fly a lot more than I ever did before. It’s more situational for me though depending on the water and how accurate I need to be (probably 40% of the time).
Depending on the river, once I find a fly they are targeting, I’ve periodically been running the same fly on point and dropper with a lil heavier fly on the bottom (when tight line nymphing) with a lot of success. I was just in Idaho and surprised how trout were almost split between the point and dropper with the same pattern.
I agree with both of you! CDC collers are great. They don’t show up as visible as you think when the flies in the water and I think that is a good thing. They are somewhat see through. I don’t know if it’s that little bit of action, or transparency, or catching air bubbles, or all of the above, but I’m a big believer in them.
Jimbo, do you know when the transition of the website to servers that can handle the load will be done, or if it has already been done? You sounded a little skeptical in your previous post. Just wondering if you have a little extra insight into whether there’s a possibility that it’s going to have to be rescheduled again? Thanks again for being somewhat of a liaison and communicator for us here on the forum.
So many ideas, but when your look at them, there is not going to be an answer that everybody likes no matter what and an answer that is fair for everybody. We turned a new page last year and it doesn’t look like it will ever go back to the way it was. It is sad, and I was upset sitting at my computer for hours. I lost half a days pay because of it. BUT, it’s the way it goes! It’s not like somebody died, or you got diagnosed with a terminal illness. I’m not going to get upset over something like this. I did wish there was a little more communication so that so many wouldn’t have lost time sitting at their computers. But like Jimbo said, if I can’t get a pass, I’ll still be on the river and I’ll still be fully supporting GRTU.
I want it to be made known I and many others appreciate what is going on behind the scenes. It is not easy making weighty decisions, and I’m glad I’m not the one that has to do it.
If anybody doesn’t get a pass and need to get some fishing in, you can always send me a message and you can come down to my area around Rockport and I’ll put you on some redfish in the flats. Hooked up on an oversized redfish always puts a smile on my face.
Here to hoping all on here get a pass Tuesday!!
For those that did not get the email…
2021 – 2022 GRTU Lease Access Program
Rescheduled for October 5th at 12pm CSTAs you can imagine, having the site crash was not our intended goal for the Lease Access Program enrollment. We quadrupled our server capacity from last year and the overwhelming demand of more than 2000 impressions on site choked the site to death… again.
We’re in the process of migrating to the largest server our commercial hosting service offers. This will take some time so we’re going to reschedule the Lease Access Program enrollment to next Tuesday, October 5th at 12pm CST.
I get it. It is frustrating as all get out. I appreciate your patience and the mostly positive messages. As for the aggressive folks, try and breathe a bit. There are a lot of folks working in the background here making it possible to catch trout in Texas. Without the LAP the Guadalupe would be a much different fishery.
Thank you for your patience.
