Protecting and wildlife or fish for the public good has never been the mission of TP&W best I can tell. It’s all about the landowners and dollars. That is the reason I quit hunting in TX. Take your money else where. There is excellent fishing in other states, they have built great fisheries and protect them well. It sucks that this is happening, and I will fish the Guad in the winter as long as I can, but I know it has a limited life. Maybe I’ll take up redfish at the coast, or trout in northern AR in the winter like all the Montana guys do. But in TX, those who own the land, own the government, and they will get what they want.
I second the spend a day with JC comment. I picked up Euro nymping this summer in Pagos Springs via a trip with Williams Creek Fly Shop. I had my best year ever in CO. I fished 16 days total. One of those with JC on the San Juan and we did pretty well 98 fish between us. He was euro and I most indicator fished. He way outfished me, which is normal if you have ever fished with JC….. In total I netted 180 fish on an indicator rig in in 7 days and 670 fish on a euro rig in 9 days. I had a 200, 191, and 138 fish days on the euro and no one around me was catching fish but they were not euro fishing. I even gave them some of the bugs I was using. Needless to say I am HOOKED! but, I don’t think it ideal for all conditions. Really slow water, especially really big slow water is tough. It is great in small fast water and small pockets like under a waterfall. You can’t really fish it any other way. you can fish under bushes on a cut bank, etc that an indicator rig just won’t do.
BigY fly has a 10 3wt euro rod that is reasonable to start with as well. That is what I use. it isn’t a T&T, but is is also $160 comes with a lifetime warranty that I have used and they are great to deal with. https://www.bigyflyco.com/BigYStandardFlyRod-detail.htm
I have found everyone has a different leader set up so find what works for you.
There is no solution that will make everyone happy, and everyone has an opinion. What I do think we can expect is a registration site that will not crash. If we get that, then everyone has a fair shot at a spot.
Thanks for all your work Jimbo.
There are generally spots on the board that come up from time to time. If you want to have a voice and try to push your opinions, run for the spots.
I caught several fish today that didn’t have good color. They looked dull and colors were washed out. They also didn’t fight as well and took a bit of reviving to get them going for the net. Not sure what was up, but I haven’t seen this before. None of them had the spots though.
I’ve watch lease members fish without a net and drag fish up onto the bank to release. I expect it from the one trip a year people who just don’t know or care, but if you know enough to be on the leases, you should know how to handle fish. Best not to touch them at all if possible.
