Saw you guys Sunday as I was walking out. Thanks and good job. That stretch really gets trashed. I too saw quite a few dead fish, a couple were rainbows less than 18 inches. My guess is a bait fisherman hit the spots and killed a few trying to get the one they could walk out with. I fish that area a lot and that was the largest number of dead fish I have ever seen there. Same thing seems to happen at barking dog to the S turns. At times there seems to be piles of dead fish. Very sad. We all need to pay attention and call the Game Warden any time you see people breaking the law. We also need to do all we can to get bait fishing in the trophy water shut down! We have an opportunity to create a great trophy water fishery with large numbers of holdovers, if we keep working at it. What we have is amazing, don’t get me wrong, but we can make it even better. Maybe the increase in quality C&R fishermen, will actually help protect the fish.
Again Thank You!
I just heard that NM has shut down the San Juan quality waters to all out of state people. I’m headed to Pagosa this weekend so no fishing in the San Juan.
JC here are the Abominable Snowman. Some get a bit more flash than the other. I’m not sure why they work, but they do. Sort of like why do trout hit Stone flies when there are no stone flies in that river? I don’t know why, but if they hit it, I’ll throw it!
I use the Pearl UV dubbing
It was the quality waters, TX Hole to be more precise. I waded, no guide boat this trip. I’ve fished there enough the past couple years I am getting them figured out pretty well. I think it took me 10 minutes on my first trip to land number one so they are consistent in what they will eat. Some bugs are better than others. One thing I can say, THEY LOVE ANTS, BIG ANTS!
JC, I’ll post up a pick once I get some more tied. I am running short on flies and need to get busy tying. And I did a bit of poor man’s Euroing there. It is much more effective than an indicator. The fish see the drag from the indicator in the San Juan. I saw lots of people Euro nymphing this trip and I really haven’t seen that in the past.
